US Ambassador to Russia: The hole between our countries has become deeper
Today, Russian-American relations are bad, but they cannot be compared with those during the Cold War between the USSR and the USA.
The US Ambassador to the Russian Federation, John Sullivan, said this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, in an interview with Nezavisimaya Gazeta.
“I came here a year ago with the task of President Trump to do everything in my power to try to improve relations between the United States and Russia, and I already quoted the words of my former boss Rex Tillerson, who came to Moscow for the first time in March 2017 as US Secretary of State. At a press conference where Tillerson attended with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, he said that we have reached the lowest point in US-Russian relations since the end of the Cold War, that we are in a hole and we need to stop digging this hole further.
And that we need to work together in those areas where it is possible, but that the United States will defend its values, its allies and partners and confront Russia where necessary. That's what we did. Unfortunately, the list of issues on which we have confrontation has become longer, the hole has become deeper,” the diplomat admitted.
He also emphasized that the United States maintained a dialogue with Moscow even during the Cold War, and focused on the differences between the current period and the past.
“But what else has changed? Connections between the United States and Russia, between the American people and the people of Russia. Over a thousand American companies operate in Russia. Under the Soviet Union, a thousand American companies did not operate here. International exchanges and cultural exchanges have grown and are flourishing – and at the heart of this growth are the relations between our peoples,” Sullivan said.
