The action is timed to coincide with the Independence Day of Ukraine and the 25th anniversary of the Baltic Way. On August 23, 1989, residents of the three Baltic republics of the USSR organized a 600-kilometer-long “human chain” connecting the Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian SSRs. The action was called to demonstrate the unity of the Baltic states in the struggle for democracy and secession from the Union.
The current “human chain” on European Square is organized to show support for Ukraine from the Baltic countries.
The action was attended by representatives of the Baltic countries, in particular, Ambassador of Latvia Argita Daudze, Ambassador of Lithuania Petras Vaitiekunas and Deputy Ambassador of Estonia Ulla Uibo, MPs of Ukraine, public figures, as well as Minister of Culture Evgeniy Nishchuk, who called the paths of the Baltic states and Ukraine similar, Deputy Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Daniil Lubkivsky.
The speakers noted that Ukraine today is “the leading edge of the fight against Russian imperialism” - just as the Baltic states were during the collapse of the USSR.
It is the Baltic countries that most consistently support Ukraine in its choice, unlike some other EU countries, the speakers emphasized.
They also remembered the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, signed 75 years ago. According to the speakers, it became one of the manifestations of Soviet and Russian imperialism, which the Baltic states managed to defeat
After the speeches, those gathered joined hands and formed a “human chain” in front of the Ukrainian House.
