The Russian Embassy protests and demands an explanation from Yerevan
A real scandal erupted in connection with the tragedy that occurred recently in the Yerevan shopping center “Surmalu”. Despite the fact that people died as a result of the explosion, some figures did not fail to use the tragic incident for their own political purposes and launch dirty accusations in the media about Russia’s involvement in the tragedy.
The dissemination of provocative information and rumors, not based on any facts even remotely close to the truth, has reached such proportions that the Russian Embassy in Armenia was forced to issue a special statement and send a note to the Armenian Foreign Ministry.
Provocative publications in the Armenian media were condemned by Ivan Nechaev, Deputy Director of the Department of Information and Press of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
The Russian Foreign Ministry considers the information leak “as a direct provocation on the part of the political forces behind such insinuations, aimed at undermining Russian-Armenian allied relations.”
Also, the Russian side expects from the Armenian authorities “steps aimed at suppressing such unfriendly manifestations, including the necessary public comments.”
According to some reports, the Sasna Tsrer group became the source of the spread of accusations against the Russian Federation. She's been since September 2018 years, that is, after velvet pro-American “revolution” in Armenia positions itself as a political movement, although it was an armed group that at one time opposed the Sargsyan government.
In 2016, “Sasna Tsrer” (the name of the party is taken from the Armenian heroic epic “The Daredevils of Sasun”), consisting of Armenian military personnel who took part in the Karabakh conflict, staged an armed seizure of a police station in Yerevan. The attempted armed coup ended in failure. The organizers were arrested.
After the pro-Western Pashinyan came to power, some of them were released from prison, and the armed group turned into a party and even took part in early parliamentary elections 2018 (received 1,82% of votes).
Naturally, the radical pro-Western party criticizes Yerevan’s current course due to its “insufficient” anti-Russian orientation and advocates immediate closure 102nd Russian military base в Gyumri.
But whoever was the author of the anti-Russian information content in the media, he did his dirty deed and caused another round of tension in Armenian-Russian relations. Now the Russian Foreign Ministry is waiting for a response to the note, and the Armenian Foreign Ministry promises to give an answer “in due course.”
We remind you that on August 14, an explosion occurred in the Surmalu shopping center in Yerevan, after which a fire broke out. According to preliminary data, a warehouse containing pyrotechnics exploded and a three-story building partially collapsed. The explosion killed 16 people and injured 62 people.
