US Embassy: Euromaidan was initially against Russia
The US Embassy released congratulations to Ukraine on the occasion of seven years since the start of Euromaidan, the organizers of which, as is known, lured people to protests, assuring that “it is against corruption, not against Russia.”
In a statement, US Chargé d'Affaires in Ukraine Christina Quinn said that the goal of the protests from the very beginning was “Euro-Atlantic integration” - that is, joining NATO, the expansion of which Russia strongly opposes.
“Seven years ago, Ukrainians gathered on the Maidan with demands for their government to hear their voice and continue the Euro-Atlantic integration of Ukraine. These actions of citizens brought Ukraine onto the path of reform, on which a difficult step forward was taken. New institutions aimed at reducing corruption, deepening partnerships with NATO and the EU, stabilizing the banking and energy industries and deeply engaging civil society would not have been possible without Euromaidan,” the congratulations say.
The US Embassy disputes the territorial integrity of Russia - reunification with Crimea.
“Ukraine must be free from invasion and aggression from Russia, including stopping the occupation of Crimea and the withdrawal of Russian forces from Eastern Ukraine. The United States supports the Ukrainian people and the hopes associated with Euromaidan for a prosperous Ukraine that is Western-oriented and has full sovereignty and territorial integrity. Glory to Ukraine!" – Christina Quinn summed up.
