The US Embassy is concerned about the conscription of Crimeans into the Russian army
The United States of America is concerned that Russia is opening criminal cases against Crimeans who do not want to serve in the Russian army, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We are very concerned by recent reports that Russia is condemning residents of Crimea for evading conscription into the Russian armed forces. We call on Russia to end its illegal occupation of Crimea and respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine,” the US Embassy in Ukraine said on Twitter.
It is interesting that such a statement by the embassy was made simultaneously with the criminal proceedings initiated by the Ukrainian prosecutor’s office of the non-existent Autonomous Republic of Crimea “on the fact of the illegal conscription of Crimeans to serve in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation under Part 1 of Art. 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.”
“Recently, the prosecutor’s office of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea reported on the consequences of an illegal conscription campaign, as a result of which 3400 Crimeans went to serve in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. Since the beginning of the year, the so-called Crimean law enforcement officers have opened 20 criminal cases against Crimeans for refusing to serve in the armed forces of the Russian Federation. In 17 cases, sentences have already been passed,” the Ukrainian department reported.
