US Embassy spokesman in Moscow Joseph Kruzic "saw no evidence that Russia has stopped supporting the separatists." “According to our information, a significant amount of weapons has been accumulated in one of the locations in the southwest of the Russian Federation. It includes tanks - models that are no longer used by the Russian armed forces, armored vehicles, multiple launch rocket systems, artillery and air defense systems,” said the American diplomat. “We fear that most of these weapons will be transferred to the separatists in southeastern Ukraine.” According to our data, over the past month the Russian Federation has already transferred tanks, multiple launch rocket systems and other types of heavy weapons to them from there.”
At the European Union summit on Wednesday, the United States and England will attempt to agree on new sanctions against Russia: several EU countries believe that Moscow is not doing enough to de-escalate the situation in southeast Ukraine. Washington and Kyiv are also demanding tougher sanctions.
Moscow denies any involvement in the supply of militias with weapons. On Monday, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced its intention to invite OSCE observers to the border with Ukraine, without waiting for a ceasefire. Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed to place them only with the onset of a truce.
Thus, the Russian authorities softened their position, including in order to deprive the arguments of supporters of tightening sanctions.
Moscow’s readiness to compromise on the Ukrainian issue will certainly be appreciated by opponents of tough measures, including not only Italy, but also several other EU countries (France, Germany, Austria, Bulgaria, Greece and Slovenia). To expand EU sanctions against the Russian Federation, a consensus of all its members is needed. Experts are confident that in the current situation it will not be possible to achieve unanimity among Europeans. American media, however, do not rule out that in such a scenario the United States may introduce unilateral sanctions against the Russian Federation.
