“Put himself next to Putin”: Orban considered part of Ukraine to be Hungary
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban attended a friendly football match between Hungary and Greece in Budapest wearing a scarf depicting a map of “Greater Hungary,” which includes parts of neighboring states, including Ukraine.
The Croatian website Index writes about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
In the published photos and videos you can see a scarf with a map on which Hungary includes the regions of Austria, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Ukraine and Croatia.
“This is another irresponsible step by Viktor Orbán, who showed up with a scarf with a map of Greater Hungary. It's a revisionist gesture that puts Orbán alongside Putin, who also dreams of changing borders. EU leaders should impose sanctions on him and isolate him in the European Council,” Romanian MEP Alin Mituta said on this occasion.
Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic reacted more restrainedly.
“As for scarves, I haven’t seen them, I haven’t had a chance to deal with other people’s scarves... As for territorial claims against Croatia from anyone, including Hungary, they are absolutely unacceptable, for us this is not an option,” he said Plenkovic.
The Croatian publication notes that this is not the first time that Orban has caused outrage by mentioning “Greater Hungary.”
“In 2020, he published a photograph of a globe, which also depicts the borders of the Kingdom of Hungary before the end of the First World War. The case caused irritation, especially in Croatia and Romania. By the Treaty of Trianon in 1920, the Kingdom of Hungary lost a significant part of its former territory. In Hungary, this is still considered a great historical shame,” says Index.
