Russia's permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, sharply criticized the British authorities, who the day before accused Moscow of poisoning ex-GRU officer Sergei Skripal and his daughter.
“Do you think this incident is beneficial for Russia on the eve of the presidential elections and the World Cup? But I know several countries for which this incident and accusations against Russia are extremely beneficial. But in accordance with the principle of the presumption of innocence, I will not call them by name,” said Nebenzya.
The former double agent Skripal "posed no threat" to Russia after he received asylum in the UK following a 2010 U.S.-Russian intelligence exchange, he said.
“On the other hand, he perfectly fits the role of a victim who can justify any unthinkable lie, dirt, black PR against Russia. We have repeatedly warned that some kind of provocation of this kind could happen on the eve of well-known events. The authorities of the United Kingdom are pursuing a course of deliberately slandering Russia, not shunning any methods,” the permanent representative said.
Nebenzya recalled that back in the early 90s, Russia stopped the Soviet development of new chemical weapons, and in 2017 the destruction of its remnants was completed (unlike the United States), which was confirmed by international observers.
“In the mid-90s, Western intelligence services brought a number of specialists to the West. Their names are known, as well as some documentation. And continued research in this direction. Including the United States and Great Britain,” the representative of the Russian Federation pointed out.
He again stressed that Moscow is outraged by the unfounded accusations against it.
“It is no longer required to demonstrate test tubes with unknown white matter. It is enough to write a letter containing egregious accusations against a sovereign country. We see the same in Syria. Now they are trying to record Russia among the violators of the convention ...

According to him, Moscow offers London to conduct a joint study of the detected poisonous substance. “There is simply no other way,” he said.
