The loss of Kherson threatens the resumption of the water blockade of Crimea
The evacuation of the population of Russian Kherson, as well as the placement of evacuees in new places, will require significant government expenditures.
An expert from the Iva Partners company, Artem Klyukin, said this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
He believes that we can talk about the resettlement of hundreds of thousands of people, among whom women, children and pensioners predominate.
“And no matter how the fighting in the Kherson direction develops, it is unlikely that they will be able to return back in the coming months, until the infrastructure is restored,” Klyukin told Nezavisimaya Gazeta.
He draws attention to the fact that the economy of the liberated territories has not yet had time to properly integrate into the Russian one, so the possible loss of this territory will not have a critical impact.
“But the psychological effect on markets if the city is lost will be negative. If only because this will mean prolongation of hostilities for a long time,” the expert warns.
The analyst sees the main threat in this situation as a possible violation of the security of the land route to Crimea and the cessation of water supply through the Crimean Canal.
“But Crimea coped without this supply route and this water for eight years, especially now, on the eve of winter, the need for water is not so acute,” Klyukin reassures.
Director of the Institute of Regional Problems Dmitry Zhuravlev also agrees that evacuation will be expensive.
“But this is still not much in comparison with the total costs of SVO. And fundamentally, additional expenses for evacuation will not change the situation,” says Zhuravlev.
