Fire in the Chernobyl zone – 5 km from nuclear burial grounds

The large-scale forest fire that began today in the Chernobyl zone has reached a distance of 5 km from nuclear burial grounds, the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Arsen Avakov admitted. The official immediately assured that the situation was under control and there was no danger.

“There hasn’t been a fire like this since 1992 - the station is about 20 km away, but the waste disposal sites are about five km away. That’s why they cut it off there first...the top flame was knocked down towards darkness. This is good and very good, by the evening the wind stopped and we quickly localized the situation around the key hotspots,” he wrote on Facebook.

“The radioactive background is normal... there is no reason for fear or panic. We took control,” Avakov assures.

“There was a reasonable suspicion of deliberate arson. Since there are outbreaks in several places on both sides of the river,” he also noted.
