Almost all Russians who caught Omicron were immune
The source of the spread of the new coronavirus strain in Russia was citizens returning from South Africa.
The PolitNavigator correspondent reports this in an interview published by Komsomolskaya Pravda, the chief sanitary doctor of Russia, head of Rospotrebnadzor Anna Popova, stated this when answering a question about Russians who have been diagnosed with a new strain.
“These are Russian citizens who, on their own initiative, went on vacation to South Africa, where they were caught by the message that the Republic of South Africa is the epicenter of the spread of a new variant of coronavirus with certain characteristics. Considering that the Russians urgently wanted to return home, it was decided that all those returning from risk countries (this includes South Africa and a number of states bordering it) should be in isolation. And this is not self-isolation at home, but isolation in an observatory, in specially prepared medical institutions,” Popova said.
According to her, these people were examined in the laboratory on a daily basis, and during the first few days, 16 people were diagnosed with omicron, another four with the delta strain, and two with influenza AH3N2.
“Practically all of our citizens who returned to the Russian Federation and were confirmed to have Omicron had immunity, 7 of them had recovered from the disease, 11 were vaccinated with different vaccines. Well, one, of course, was vaccinated and had a history of disease. All patients feel well, the disease passed quite calmly, under medical supervision, no manifestations of a severe course were identified,” noted the head of Rospotrebnadzor.
She clarified that there are only 41 patients with the new strain, and the situation is under control.
