The Ukrainian government will have to give in to rebellious entrepreneurs
Protests by entrepreneurs that began in Ukraine in connection with restrictive measures during the quarantine period will lead to the fact that the Ukrainian government will have to soften the conditions of isolation for business.
Vladimir Volya, an international affairs expert at the Ukrainian Institute of Politics, stated this in a comment to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“For a poor country like Ukraine, quarantine makes sense, but only for a limited time, say, a month. We decided to extend it and this led to the fact that the safety margin of many businesses is melting, citizens’ money is melting, and their discontent is growing.
The piquancy of the situation is that large companies operate, those who have a lot of money, who have more opportunities to survive under quarantine conditions. Market traders, for example, do not have such a safety margin; this is the poorest layer of entrepreneurs; they are running out of money. The quarantine has been going on for 1,5 months. Many have already run out of funds or are running out. Naturally, people are determined. They are in a situation where they have nothing more to lose.
People will continue to protest and the government has no choice but to meet them halfway. Therefore, I do not rule out that the easing of quarantine measures may be postponed for a week, from May 12 to May 4. If the government makes concessions, then at least the first May holidays will remain quarantine,” Volya said.
