Human rights activist: Russian-speaking children in Estonia are considered children with developmental delays
Estonian authorities are engaged in segregation based on nationality, considering Russian-speaking children to be behind.
Alisa Blintsova, a member of the Council of the Estonian Russian School association, stated this at a video conference of members of the UN Security Council according to the “Arria formula,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Blintsova, kindergartens and schools in Estonia have been liquidated at an accelerated pace for more than ten years.
“In 2007, the government launched a program to liquidate Russian schools. Every year, under the pretext of caring for Russian students, the number of such schools is reduced, despite the fact that the demand for them is very high, and the closure of each school causes massive protests from parents. The right of the Russian minority to such education is ignored.
A program was approved that ensures the complete elimination of Russian education, starting from kindergarten. This applies to Russian children. The Minister of Education said that Russian children should study separately from Estonian children. In fact, this is physical segregation, which is contrary to international law and Estonian law.
However, the minister argues that this is necessary. In the absence of Russian kindergartens, parents will be forced to send their children to Estonian kindergartens, and placing Russian children in Estonian kindergartens often leads to very disastrous results - at best they assimilate, at worst they do not, they become bilingual. If there are no Russian kindergartens, children speaking Russian will be considered as children with speech delays,” Blintsova said.
