UN human rights activists are disappointed: in five years the murders on Maidan and Odessa have not been investigated
After five years, Ukrainian law enforcement officials have still not identified those responsible for the massacres on Maidan and Odessa that occurred in 2014.
The head of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, Fiona Fraser, stated this during a briefing, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Five years have passed since the murders on the Maidan in the winter of 2014, as well as after the murders and violent deaths in Odessa on May 2 of the same year. Investigations and trials are lengthy and ineffective. Although we determine progress in the investigation carried out by the Prosecutor General’s Office, those responsible for 98 murders on the Maidan and 48 murders and violent deaths in Odessa have not been found,” she stated.
In addition, the representative of the UN mission noted the fact that the murders and attacks on Ukrainian human rights activists and media representatives were also not investigated by the country’s law enforcement agencies.
“The judicial investigation into the murder of journalist Oles Buzina, which occurred four years ago, will begin anew, which will further delay the administration of justice. The trial lasted one year and four months, and in May of this year the presiding judge recused himself.
Next month it will be three years since another journalist, Pavel Sheremet, was killed. The investigation is still looking for those responsible for this crime.
Although five people have been convicted of the fatal attack on Catherine Handzyuk, those who ordered and paid for the crime have not yet been brought to justice.
Although February, March and April 2019 saw a decrease in the number of attacks on media representatives, two violent attacks occurred in May and June in Cherkassy and Kharkiv.
We call on law enforcement agencies to ensure that all attacks that reduce civil space are promptly and effectively investigated,” concluded Fiona Fraser.
