The right and left of Germany opposed Merkel's anti-Russian sanctions
Despite their polar political views, the left and right parties in Germany do not consider restrictive measures against Russia an effective tool for resolving political issues, Izvestia writes.

“There was no discussion about the need to introduce another package of restrictive measures. There will be a meeting in parliament in two weeks, and we may raise this issue. I generally oppose any sanctions. What are they needed for? They are not political instruments that would in any way contribute to Russia's defeat in the conflicts in Syria and Ukraine. — Of course, this is not at all a tool for solving the problem, but simply a war without weapons in order to achieve political goals,” the publication quotes the opinion of the chairman of the Bundestag Defense Committee, one of the founders of the “Left” party, Alexander Neu.
It is noteworthy that the political antagonists of the left from the rapidly gaining popularity of the Alternative for Germany party adhere to a similar position.
“Our party has a clear position on this issue. All sanctions against Russia must be lifted, the party’s press service told Izvestia. – It is necessary to think not about the fact that this will somehow harm the Russian economy, but also remember about the harm to German industry. It is necessary to stop the anti-German policy pursued by the CDU party led by Angela Merkel. It is clear that trade relations with Russia are necessary for the benefit of both sides. We should also not forget about the special historical ties between the two countries, and it is important to restore again the balance that existed before the sanctions period.”
