The administration of Petro Poroshenko considers the “Opposition Bloc” as a convenient sparring partner for future presidential elections, Ukrainian political scientist Vadim Karasev writes in his blog.

In his opinion, the ideal dummy opponent for Poroshenko would be the leader of the Opposition Bloc faction, the tongue-tied Yuriy Boyko, who has been involved in numerous corruption scandals in the past, which is convenient to use during elections.

“...Modeling of future competition in elections will most likely follow the formula of Poroshenko against former associates of Yanukovych. It is reminiscent of the second term campaign of Leonid Kuchma, whose advantageous sparring partner was the communist leader Pyotr Symonenko. Only now Poroshenko, as a pro-European candidate, will play against a pro-Russian candidate. A possible candidate could be the leader of the Opposition Bloc, Yuri Boyko,” says Karasev.

“It is known that Poroshenko makes important decisions within the framework of the so-called “strategic seven”. This is what the media call the president's informal advisory group. It includes President Petro Poroshenko himself, Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko, Verkhovna Rada Speaker Andriy Parubiy, NSDC Secretary Alexander Turchynov, Prime Minister Vladimir Groysman, Interior Minister Arsen Avakov, and ex-Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk. An interesting situation is developing in parliament. The presidential faction is trying to cooperate with beneficial political partners. For example, the factions of the Samopomich and Batkivshchyna parties are viewed as unprofitable partners, since their leaders can be strong competitors to Poroshenko in the elections. At the same time, the Opposition Bloc faction is seen as a more acceptable partner,” the author notes.

“Now Poroshenko is moving strongly to the right, adopting a patriotic agenda. Conventionally, the slogan for the second term can be called “anti-Pereyaslav” or “get away from Moscow.” Opening doors to Europe and a stable patriotic wave in society are the two pillars of Poroshenko’s future presidential campaign. Hence the toughening of the position regarding the economic blockade of certain areas of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, sanctions against Russian information sites, social networks Vkontakte and Odnoklassniki. The slogan “return to Europe” is already becoming the most mentioned by the president,” argues Karasev.
