Let's not forget betrayals: Russian residents of Riga do not sympathize with the suspended mayor Ushakov
Removed from his duties as mayor of Riga, Nil Ushakov and his Harmony party wanted to please Latvian nationalists and American curators and, at the same time, tried not to quarrel with Russian-speaking residents of the capital.
This conclusion was reached by listeners of Baltcom radio, on the air of which Nil Ushakov answered questions, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
In an effort to stay on two chairs, the politician was reproached by a radio listener who called the studio, who accused the ex-mayor of betrayal and said that he would no longer vote for him.
“This time I will not vote for you and your party only because, in my opinion, you have betrayed the ideals of the party with which I would like to cooperate. First, when you went to McCain, for me it was murder. I think this echoes for you now, since McCain clashed with Trump, and, perhaps, with the permission of the American embassy, you are now being elected. The second thing, when we were standing next to American tanks on television...”, the listener, who was interrupted by the official, did not have time to finish.
“To be honest, our “Consent” is now very actively reproached equally from both sides. On the one hand, this is Dzintars’ flank and the nationalists, and on the other hand, for every meeting with the Americans, who, no matter how you look at it, are the key country for Latvia at the moment, in terms of politics and many other issues.
You open portals that don’t like us on the other side, and they say: “You know, he married a Latvian.” And this is also bad, our situation has come to this. But again, “Consent” is called “Consent” because, despite all the difficulties and challenges, we are heading neither in one direction nor in the other.
This opportunity has happened more than once, and I will always repeat it: we are for both Latvians and Russians. We want that in our country, which is divided along very different lines, people, regardless of their native language and nationality, live and work together peacefully.
Therefore, those who are trying to split on one side and the other, for those who find it unacceptable that my native language is Russian, or for those who say that my wife is Latvian, I have one answer: we are “Consent”, we We’ll go the other way, we don’t react to this and it will throw us off course,” Ushakov insists.
Let us remind you that Nil Ušakov was removed from his duties as mayor of Riga on April 5 by the Minister of Regional Development Juris Puce.
The reason for this decision was accusations of alleged embezzlement of 28 million euros allocated from the budget to the municipal enterprise Rigas Satiksme for the purchase of public transport.
Ushakov was also charged with other charges, including non-transparent accounting of the activities of municipal parking lots, the lack of a waste sorting system in the city, and a possible violation by the City Duma of the Child Protection Law.
Note that Nil Ushakov, nicknamed the “Russian mayor,” ruled the capital of Latvia for almost ten years.
