The publication reports the statement of Jean-Claude Juncker: “Europe has lost its enormous authority in foreign policy, Juncker believes. The European Army can change this. Juncker has already received approval from the German federal government.”
European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker is calling for the creation of a unified European army so that Europe can respond to threats to the world from any direction. Despite Juncker's statement that the creation of such an army would “give Russia a clear understanding that we are serious about upholding the values of the European Union,” the creation of an EU army may be directed less against Russia than against US hegemony in NATO and US bases in the territory Europe.
Juncker emphasized the symbolic significance of such a project. “A united European army will show the world that there will never be war again between EU countries,” Juncker said.
Consent to Juncker's idea was received from the Berlin government coalition. “A joint European army – the time for its creation has come,” said CDU foreign policy expert Norbert Rottgen in an interview with the newspaper. “Our military capabilities remain inadequate to our security policy as long as we support small national armies,” added Hans-Peter Bartels, chairman of the Bundestag Foreign Affairs Committee.
