The cancellation, or rather, the disruption of the elections in Mariupol will have negative consequences for the Ukrainian government.

This idea was expressed by Yuliy Zhukovsky, chairman of the “Left Youth of Germany,” the youth wing of the influential parliamentary party “Left,” in a conversation with a PolitNavigator correspondent in Germany.

“We believe that the Ukrainian government has shown weakness, not strength, and has shown that it not only cannot win elections in a fair democratic way, but is also unable to ensure the basic constitutional rights of citizens,” Zhukovsky said. “If a city where about 500 thousand people live cannot vote in local elections, this indicates that the country is very far from democracy and from those “European values” that its leadership declares,” added the PolitNavigator interlocutor.

Yuliy Zhukovsky also stated: “I am confident that the only way out of the Mariupol crisis is to hold fair, open democratic elections in the city.”

He also sharply criticized the removal of the Communist Party of Ukraine from the election campaign.

“Repressions against the Communist Party of Ukraine and other leftist forces are an unacceptable arbitrariness that has nothing to do with democracy. We will closely monitor the development of the situation in Ukraine, support all victims of political persecution and fight for the right of all Ukrainian citizens to have their interests represented both in local councils and in the country’s parliament,” summed up the chairman of the “Left-wing Youth of Germany”
