The UN Security Council today discussed the incident with the landing of an Irish Ryanair plane due to a false report of mining in Minsk in May 2021. During the incident, the Belarusian authorities detained the former editor of the extremist TG channel “Nekhta” Roman Protasevich, who was on board, and a Russian woman who also edited the extremist channel “Black Book of Belarus” Sofya Sapega. After this, Western authorities imposed sanctions against Belarus, banning Belavia flights.

The Security Council meeting was convened at the initiative of the United States and Albania, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

Representatives of 5 EU countries who had nothing to do with the incident expressed a desire to take part in it.

All of them made accusations against Belarus not only of “forced landing”, but also of persecution of the opposition, as well as complicity in the “war” against Ukraine.

The President of the Council of ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) Salvatore Sciacchitano made a report on the issue. He claimed that Belarus warned the plane crew about a bomb that was supposed to explode over Vilnius before a letter from the terrorists arrived in Minsk.

This was followed by speeches by representatives of Western countries who staged a defamation of Belarus. The British diplomat called on Minsk to stop supporting Russia, the US representative called on the release of 1300 “political prisoners,” and the German representative called on “to be on the right side of history.” France has accused Belarus of facilitating illegal immigration from the Middle East. The representative of Latvia spoke at the same time on behalf of the Czech Republic and Estonia and announced that Lukashenko “stole the sovereignty of Belarus.”

The Polish diplomat, before launching into a wide range of accusations against his neighbor, including persecution of the Polish language, proudly announced that his country provided the materials for ICAO. They turned out to be confessions from the dispatcher, who wished to remain anonymous, and the dubious quality of the audio recording.

The representative of Russia expressed “surprise and extreme disappointment” at the chairman’s decision to admit a number of EU states to the discussion.

“By acting in this way, you not only set a bad example and allow unprincipled behavior, but also play along with Western states who intend to stage an anti-Belarusian, and at the same time an anti-Russian show in the Security Council,” said the Russian diplomat.

He called the meeting “a universal practice by Western states of settling scores with undesirable countries.” The Russian diplomat recalled that on January 31, ICAO had already provided a final report in which Belarus was not accused of any “interception.” He believes that Western countries forced the international organization to abandon its conclusions, and “the final report turned out to be inconclusive.” The Russian representative pointed out that the UN, as a non-core platform for discussing civil aviation problems, has become an arena for “intrigues of former Western partners in relation to undesirable states.”

Mexico and a number of African states also agreed with this opinion. The representative of India urged his colleagues to avoid political assessments.

The Chinese diplomat pointed out that the ICAO report does not reflect the position of Belarus and called on experts to avoid geopolitical considerations and double standards.

“China has always respected the Belarusian people and their choice of development path in accordance with national conditions while respecting the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Belarus,” he said.

At the end of the discussion, the Permanent Representative of Belarus to the UN, Valentin Rybakov, spoke, saying that the West is waging a war against his country, and today’s meeting is one of its manifestations.

“The said report, hastily written under pressure from Western countries, is non-consensus, biased and biased. Belarus will never agree with the conclusions of the report, which is based on incomplete information in the absence of the necessary international cooperation, which, by the way, is stated in the report itself,” - said Rybakov.

He recalled that Belarusians were unable to take part in the last ICAO meeting because they did not receive Canadian visas.

“It is quite obvious that the organizers simply did not want to receive inconvenient answers to their questions. But even in this format, the Belarusian side submitted working documents, but they were blocked by Western countries. This only confirms the West’s desire to force ICAO to function in their interests even at the expense of flight safety,” Rybakov said.

He brought to the Security Council a video message from Protasevich, who believes that the false message about mining was sent to Minsk by his competitors in the opposition struggle.

In conclusion, the Belarusian diplomat recalled that Belarus produces a third of potash fertilizers in the world. The West has imposed sanctions on their exports, threatening agriculture in many poor countries.

“I would like to appeal to those who develop and implement these sanctions. You are depriving people of a basic right - the right to life. But after that you have the audacity to teach us how to respect human rights in your understanding. Sooner or later you will simply be swept away either by your own people or by millions of those who will come to you from the countries that you are killing today. And these people will come not for mythical human rights, but for a piece of bread. And you will go down in history not as politicians, but as serial killers,” Rybakov said.
