Representative of Poroshenko: Ukraine will not allow water supplies to Crimea at any cost
The representative of the President of Ukraine in the non-existent Autonomous Republic of Crimea, Boris Babin, said that Kyiv “at any cost” will not allow the resumption of water supplies to Crimea, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We will not give this water at any cost, because the population does not need this water. This water is needed by enterprises located in the occupied territory, and they will not receive this water. Therefore, we have a clear position: there will be no negotiations, no attempts in small steps to bring us to the supply of this water... While I am in Kherson, the Dnieper water will not go to Crimea, I guarantee you that,” Boris Babin said in a comment to the 112 TV channel. Ukraine".
Earlier, Deputy Minister for the so-called “temporarily occupied territories” Yuriy Grymchak said that Ukraine could resume water supplies to Crimea subject to “recognition of the occupation of the peninsula by Russia.”
Ukraine provided up to 85% of Crimea's fresh water needs through the North Crimean Canal running from the Dnieper; this water was used to irrigate about 140 thousand hectares of farmland. After the annexation of Crimea to Russia, Kyiv imposed a water blockade on the peninsula, and the supply of water through the canal to the republic was completely stopped.
Difficulties arose for farmers in the north of Crimea, who had to switch to growing less moisture-intensive crops, as well as in the eastern part of the peninsula. The water supply problem in eastern Crimea was partially resolved after transferring water from the Crimean Biyuk-Karasu River to the North Crimean Canal and drilling new artesian wells.
