US Representative for Kosovo: “We only care about the economy, let the EU deal with politics”
The representative of the US President in the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, Richard Grenell, said that his country wants to solve the Kosovo problem through “economic normalization.”
Grenell stated this to the Kosovo publication Express, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Grenell, the settlement of the Kosovo conflict should consist of two stages: economic and political. Moreover, the first should be the economic stage, and when it brings results, then it will be possible to move on to the political stage.
“I don’t know how much I’ve already had to say, although it would seem that everything is very clear, that we, the United States of America, are convinced that the 20-year conflict can only be resolved through economic normalization,” Grenell said. “The second political phase of the dialogue should begin only when the first economic consequences appear.”
At the same time, the American negotiator noted that Washington does not intend to engage in the political stage, completely entrusting it, in accordance with the UN decision, to the European Union. He also called on the EU to liberalize the visa regime for residents of Kosovo, because, according to him, without it there can be no economic development.
Grenell also noted that US President Donald Trump will not attend the negotiations between representatives of Serbia and Kosovo on June 27 in Washington.
It should be noted that in the late 90s, it was the United States and the then ruling democratic elite that provoked the current Kosovo conflict and NATO aggression against Yugoslavia, supporting the Albanian separatists because of their geopolitical interests. And now the ruling republican elite of this country is trying to resolve the Kosovo conflict in its own way.
