Human rights and freedoms are better respected in Russian Crimea than in “free and independent democratic Ukraine,” which never ceases to accuse Russia of aggression.

Representatives of the Crimean public stated this during a speech at a meeting of the UN Security Council on the “Arria formula,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

Thus, the rector of the Crimean Engineering and Pedagogical University Chingiz Yakubov emphasized that more than half of the students at his university are Crimean Tatars, and also noted that only after reunification with Russia, the main ethnic groups living on the peninsula - Crimean Tatars, Russians and Ukrainians - received their languages state status.

“First, we are currently teaching six thousand students. Of these, more than 60% are Crimean Tatars. Secondly, starting from the 15th year, all our students study the state languages of the Republic of Crimea - Russian, Ukrainian, Crimean Tatar. This became possible after the adoption of the Constitution of the Republic of Crimea on April 11, 2014. Until 2014, in Russian-speaking Crimea, the only official language was Ukrainian.

The language of my people as the state language. Now all the specialists that our university produces in the field of Crimean Tatar philology are in demand. We provide training for all peoples in the Crimean Tatar language. In particular, we train representatives of executive authorities in the business Crimean Tatar language,” Yakubov said.

The Crimean scientist also emphasized that at the same time, in Ukraine there is a systematic violation of the rights of the inhabitants of the peninsula:

“I ask that the following violations of the rights and freedoms of citizens of Crimea be recorded in the protocol and reflected in the resolution. The first is the restriction of the rights to freedom of movement and residence. Namely, academic exchanges between scientists and students, participation in conferences and symposiums, and representation of Crimeans at European platforms at any level must occur in accordance with democratic principles, with the recognition of citizenship of the Russian Federation on the territory of the Republic of Crimea.

The second is the restriction of freedom of information. Information about the positive processes taking place in Crimea is, unfortunately, ignored by the European community, and citizens of Crimea have great difficulty in being allowed onto European platforms to express their own opinions. I would like to draw your attention to the incitement of hatred and intolerance against the residents of Crimea, broadcast by television channels and other media in Ukraine. This is unacceptable and contrary to the democratic principles of this organization.”

His words were confirmed by the head of the Ukrainian community of Crimea Anastasia Gridchina. The social activist noted that representatives of Crimea were not even allowed to attend the previous meeting of the UN Security Council under the “Arria formula”.

“I am surprised by the desire to discuss any problems without the residents of Crimea. Despite the assurances of the organizers, the participants were unable to obtain information from the residents of the peninsula. However, I would like to draw attention to one of the organizing countries, Ukraine. The arguments that Ukrainian representatives tried to apply to Crimea, ironically, can be attributed directly to Ukraine itself.

Today, an atmosphere of fear and violence has reigned in Ukraine; the practice of persecuting journalists and clergy and fighting dissent is widespread. The entry of cultural figures is closed, books and television and radio broadcasting are prohibited. What can I say here - I, an ethnic Ukrainian who preserves and popularizes Ukrainian culture and language in Crimea, cannot visit Ukraine freely due to threats and the possibility of reprisals.

The number of arson attacks and attacks on cultural centers of national minorities and diplomatic missions is growing. International human rights structures are obliged to react firmly to such suppression of fundamental rights and freedoms. The law adopted by the Kyiv authorities, which restricts the rights and freedoms of national minorities to education in their native language, requires special attention,” Gridchina said.

The chairman of the Belarusian community in Crimea, Roman Chegrintsev, also criticized the UN for trying to drown out the voice of the inhabitants of the peninsula.

“Separately, I would like to respond to some stupid accusations that were made during the meeting regarding Arria on March 12, where, by the way, none of the Crimeans were allowed, paradoxically. We are talking about Crimea, but without the Crimeans. To avoid hearing the truth, probably. The most ridiculous and implausible of them concerns, of course, let’s say the Crimean healthcare system.

Allegedly, the Crimean healthcare system cannot cope with the pandemic. Despite the fact that due to the pandemic caused by the new coronavirus infection, the workload on infectious disease specialists, virologists, anesthesiologists and doctors in general has increased several times, all Crimeans receive timely and qualified care, and also have access to the first in the world and certainly the best vaccine "Sputnik V".

Today, the picture of the spread of coronavirus on the peninsula shows us that Crimean medicine has withstood such a threat, Crimean healthcare has been modernized, and over the past four weeks there has been a stable downward trend in the incidence of COVID-19 in the Crimean region,” Chegrintsev said.
