Trump's representative at the UN defends Ukraine's provocation near Kerch
The United States expressed “concern at the highest level” in connection with the incident in the Kerch Strait and the seizure by Russian special forces of Navy ships that violated the Russian border.
US Representative to the UN Nikki Haley stated this at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
She called the Russian border guards’ defense of the sovereignty of the Russian Federation an “uncivilized way of doing things.”
“I spoke with President Trump and Secretary Pompeo this morning. My statement reflects concerns at the highest levels of the US government. Over the past four years, the international community has spoken loudly, loudly and with one voice against Russia's aggression against Ukraine. The United States, the European Union, its member states and other members have imposed sanctions on Russia for unacceptable behavior in Crimea and eastern Ukraine.
On Sunday, the horrific violation of the territorial integrity of Ukraine became a kind of pattern for Russian behavior after the illegal annexation of Crimea and after the abuses in Crimea.
As a result of this conflict, more than ten thousand citizens of eastern Ukraine have already died, and so far this number has not decreased. This weekend we witnessed an ill-conceived escalation from Russia.
Let's be clear about what happened - Ukrainian ships left one port in Ukraine and were heading to another port in Ukraine. They wanted to go through the only way possible - through the Kerch Strait. Both Russia and Ukraine have used this strait constantly, but this time Russia decided to prevent the passage of Ukrainian ships.
They opened fire and even went for a ram. This is an absolutely uncivilized way of doing things, it did not allow Ukrainian ships to legally pass through the Kerch Strait and this is a violation of international law.
This is an evil act that the international community must condemn and should not accept under any circumstances... Russia must put an end to illegal behavior and respect the rights and freedom of navigation of all nations,” Haley said.
