Merkel's successor is trying to sweeten the bitter pill prescribed to Ukraine by the Bundestag
Germany will not pay Ukraine the compensation that Kyiv wanted to receive after the launch of the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
Elena Panina, State Duma deputy from the United Russia party, member of the International Affairs Committee, and director of the RUSSTRAT Institute, told PolitNavigator about this.
The politician commented on the recent speech of the German Chancellor candidate from the Christian Democratic Union, Armin Laschet, who is considered the most likely successor to Angela Merkel, and who said that when launching Nord Stream 2, it is necessary to specify a condition for refusing to use the project for geopolitical purposes.
In his opinion, Nord Stream 2 will require “European permission” for supplies after completion of construction.
“And then a condition can be set so that this cannot be used geopolitically,” the candidate especially noted.
“What does Laschet, the main candidate for Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, mean? First of all, this statement was made to “soften” the Bundestag’s position on Ukraine. Let me remind you: the German parliament recently rejected the idea of compensation to Kyiv for stopping gas transit. Germany should not pay compensation to Kyiv if Ukraine ceases to be a transit country for Russian gas,” Panina explained Laschet’s words.
In her opinion, the statement of the CDU candidate for chancellor is exclusively political and, to some extent, populist in nature.
“It is clear that Gazprom is not going to reserve the capacity of the Ukrainian gas transmission system beyond what is specified in the agreement. It is also obvious that local consumers will pay for all the loud statements of European politicians. And even with a decrease in pumping volumes, Gazprom will remain a winner due to the sharp increase in gas prices in the EU,” the deputy concluded.
As reported "PolitNavigator", President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky wants to receive from the West two billion dollars a year for 10 years after the launch of SP-2.
