Albanian Prime Minister does not consider Russia an enemy – the opposition is indignant
Prime Minister of Albania Edi Rama responded to the appeal of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to NATO countries.
Rama also commented on the emotional reaction to this letter of the country’s ex-Prime Minister and one of the leaders of the opposition Democratic Party of Albania, Sali Berisha.
As a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama emphasized that the conflict between Ukraine and Russia is quite dangerous and that the only way to resolve it is through negotiations.
“I share the view of many others that this is a fairly dangerous conflict and that we have growing tensions with high risks. But I belong to that group of people, of which, fortunately, there are many, and who believe that conversation leads to a solution, to finding a point of de-escalation of the conflict. The negotiation process must be open, which, of course, will be very difficult to do,” said the Albanian Prime Minister.
Answering a question about Sergei Lavrov's letter, transmitted to the country's leadership through the Russian Embassy in Albania, Rama said that there are no problems in bilateral relations with Russia and that the country is not an enemy of Albania, but pointed out a clear conflict of opinions with Russia.
“We have a very clear division on this [Ukrainian] issue, and all the noise around the letter is part of the folk noise at the headquarters of the Democratic Party,” Rama said.
Earlier, former Prime Minister of Albania and representative of the opposition Democratic Party of Albania, Sali Berisha, celebrated on the day of the visit of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic to Albania organization riots with the burning of Serbian flags, reacted extremely negatively to Lavrov’s letter.
“I want to condemn here the threatening letter from the Russian Embassy in Tirana and emphasize that it is the result of the capitulation of Tirana and Rama to the money of Belgrade. This is primitive blackmail, unprecedented in the history of modern Europe.
Today, Russia surpasses any force in history as a force of evil, threatening to use nuclear weapons against free countries, to invade a neighboring country, to try to destroy NATO and the only NATO member country [Albania] that remained silent, like a puppet, against this blackmail. Parliament must urgently vote for a resolution expressing solidarity with Ukraine,” Berisha said, speaking in the Albanian parliament.

Let us recall that on February 1, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov sent a message to the heads of foreign affairs departments of NATO countries.
“We want to get a clear answer to the question of how our partners understand their obligation not to strengthen their own security at the expense of the security of other states based on their commitment to the principle of indivisible security? How exactly does your government intend to fulfill this obligation in practice in modern conditions? If you refuse this obligation, please communicate this clearly,” the letter says.
