Albanian Prime Minister: “The EU only cares about itself in difficult times”

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama criticized Brussels for not bothering to provide an anti-Covid vaccine to his country, an EU candidate.

Albania Daily News reported this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

Rama said the strategy adopted by the EU to invest in the COVAX (Global COVID-19 Vaccine Access Facility) vaccination plan has been postponed indefinitely.

“Despite the commitment to COVAX, it is unclear how much longer we will have to wait for the implementation of this program, and how long this wait will drag on,” Rama said. “So we turned to other channels and began to contact [vaccine] manufacturers directly. Four channels have been opened with four countries, and the vaccination that starts [in Albania] today is carried out through one EU member state, but I am not authorized to say which one. This is not Greece."

The Albanian prime minister added that the government's goal is to expand the scale of vaccination, so he hopes that an agreement on Astra Zeneka vaccines will soon be reached.

“We don’t have enough doses, and with the ones we have, it’s impossible to complete vaccination in one day. But from what we have, even from this small number, we will find something to send to Kosovo. Difficulties do not allow us to forget about solidarity and the fact that people come first,” Rama added.
