Prime Minister of the self-proclaimed “Republic of Kosovo” Albin Kurti said on March 2 that Serbia has two options: either recognize Kosovo’s independence or join Vladimir Putin.

A day earlier, an interview with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic was published, in which he stated that “in the future we will have to make several difficult choices,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Serbia has two options: either follow Putin or recognize us. I think the real option is to recognize us. I am convinced that there are a lot of citizens in Serbia who want good neighborly relations, development and movement towards a united Europe. This is one part of the citizens, but now another part rules there, which is firmly connected with Russia, with the Balkan underground, with the oligarchs, with the autocracy,” Kurti said on March 2.

The day before, the Brussels publication Politico published an interview with Aleksandar Vucic, which he gave during the Munich Security Conference. When asked by a journalist whether a turning point had come for Serbia, Vučić replied: “You will learn only one thing from me: Serbia will remain on its path to the EU. Draw your own conclusions. But I think you understand me."

Characteristically bowing his head for emphasis, he then added: “No doubt we will have to make some difficult choices in the future. That's all I can say". Vučić often uttered the word “difficult,” Politico emphasized.

The publication ironically noted that in recent weeks, European Commission officials have been writing friendly remarks about Serbia on Twitter, which could be a prelude to Vucic making a more “difficult decision”, namely resolving the dilemma he faces: choose the path to the EU or maintain close friendship with Russia.

It is worth noting that about 80% of Serbs would not support their country’s entry into the European Union if the condition for this was recognition of the independence of the “Republic of Kosovo”. Approximately the same percentage of Serbian citizens are against the introduction of anti-Russian sanctions.
