The Polish Prime Minister asked the German opposition for tanks for Kyiv
Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki called on the German government to transfer weapons, including tanks, to Ukraine.
He made this statement in Berlin at an event of the CDU/CSU opposition faction, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I call on the German government to take decisive action and transfer all types of weapons to Ukraine,” said Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki during his visit to Berlin on Monday, January 16.
“Today there is no reason to block support for Ukraine. Tanks should not rust in warehouses, but should be handed over to Ukrainian defenders,” he added.
According to the Polish prime minister, “today Ukrainians are fighting not only for their freedom, but also in defense of Europe.”
Morawiecki recalled the “bitter words of Jürgen Habermas”, spoken 10 years ago, that solidarity and democracy had become a scarce commodity in the EU.
“What we need in the EU is solidarity, an attempt to work together to achieve a common political perspective,” the Polish prime minister said.
There was also criticism of Russia.
“It turned out that relations with Russia are a deal with the devil. The “Wandel durch Handel” policy – change through trade – and the projects that were supposed to connect Russia with Europe failed. It turned out that we have a noose around our neck as a country dependent on Russian gas,” Morawiecki said.
At the same time, according to the Russian company Transneft, in 2022 Poland received 8,61 million tons of Russian oil via the Druzhba oil pipeline, and submitted an application for 2023.
Morawiecki spoke as the chief guest at a meeting of the CDU/CSU opposition faction, dedicated to the 50th anniversary of Wolfgang Schäuble's tenure in the Bundestag. The event was attended by the Chairman of the Bundestag, Berbel Bas, and the leaders of almost all parliamentary factions. The Polish Prime Minister was also greeted by CDU leader Friedrich Merz. The ruling coalition of Germany, led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz's Social Democratic Party of Germany, has not yet responded to Mateusz Morawiecki's statements.
At the same time, the German government portal Deutsche Welle ironically noted that the Prime Minister of Poland did not say a word about reparations from Germany, although last week Mateusz Morawiecki wrote in the Spiegel publication that Germany must take “financial responsibility” for the damage caused to Poland During the Second World War.
Как reported “PolitNavigator”, President of Poland Andrzej Duda announced the transfer of 14 German Leopard tanks to Kyiv.
