The Prime Minister of Slovenia criticized the “old members” of the European Union
Prime Minister of Slovenia Janez Janša said that during Slovenia’s presidency of the Council of the EU, it was possible to change the term “European perspective” in the documents to the term “membership perspective” for the countries of the Balkans and the European East.
Janša stated this to Slovenian Television, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to him, the founding countries of the organization especially do not want to see Ukraine and the Balkans in the EU.
“I have said many times in this debate (with representatives of European states - ed.) that after everything we have experienced in the East (Europe - ed.) and what we have seen in the Balkans in recent decades, it should be clear that The EU must expand, thereby expanding the space of freedom and prosperity, said the Slovenian prime minister. “We need to get rid of the illusion that everything will be decided on our own, and if the EU does not expand, then someone else will.”
According to Jansch, at meetings in Brussels he managed to include the term “membership perspective” in EU documents instead of the term “European perspective” for the Balkans and eastern Europe, which some of the old founding members of the EU actively resisted.
“Ukraine or Serbia have a European perspective because they are in Europe and will always remain there, but they need the prospect of membership, but this was difficult to write down in documents and had to be fought for.
There is especially a lot of opportunism when it comes to the Western Balkans. One of the European leaders, I won’t mention his name, even said in the debate: “Why should we bring them to the European Union if they are already our cheap labor?” the Slovenian Prime Minister was indignant.
