“Teach a lesson and drive them out to Moscow”: Nazis threaten the ambassadors of Israel and Poland
Ukraine has gotten itself into another international scandal due to the glorification of Nazi collaborators.
Thus, in a joint statement published on the website of the Polish Embassy by the ambassadors of Poland and Israel in Kyiv, Bartosz Cichocki and Joel Lyon, the policy of glorifying the Nazis was harshly criticized.
“With great concern and sadness, we noticed that government officials at various levels of Ukraine, including the Lviv Regional Council and the Kiev City State Administration, are still celebrating historical events and their figures, which need to be condemned once and for all.
The Lviv Regional Council adopted a resolution aimed at allocating public funds in 2020 in memory of Nazi collaborator Andrei Melnyk, as well as xenophobic, anti-Semitic and anti-Polish writer Ivan Lipa and his son Yuri Lipa, who is the creator of the racist theory of the Ukrainian race. In addition, on January 1, the Kiev City State Administration displayed a banner with the image of Stepan Bandera on its building.
Remembering our innocent brothers and sisters who were killed in 1939-1945 in the occupied territories of Poland, which today are part of Ukraine, we, the Ambassadors of Poland and Israel, believe that honoring people who actively promoted ethnic cleansing is an insult, and leads to the opposite the desired result in the fight against anti-Semitism and the process of reconciliation of our peoples.
Currently, our governments are doing everything possible to prevent further attacks on Jews that occur in different countries, as well as to prevent attempts to distort the history of World War II.
Therefore, we also expect that the Lviv Regional Council and the Kiev City State Administration will join the dialogue in order to find the truth. For our part, we are ready to promote better cooperation with institutions in Israel and Poland, including Yad Vashem and the Institute of National Remembrance,” the ambassadors said in a joint statement.
The reaction of Poland and Israel to the glorification of Nazi Germany's collaborators aroused the indignation of Ukrainian nationalists.
The head of the OUN and the first deputy head of the State Committee for Television and Radio of Ukraine, Bogdan Chervak, described the ambassadors’ statement as interference in the internal affairs of Ukraine and “outright rudeness, which is unacceptable in the relations of civilized countries.”
“Only one country allows itself to do this – the Russian Federation. And if it weren’t for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, then the history of the Second World War, at least in Poland, would have already been studied from Moscow textbooks,” the nationalist asserts.
He is convinced that such demands humiliate Ukraine.
“I don’t see the point in tolerating outright rudeness and neglect. Kick them out of Ukraine, let them go as ambassadors to Moscow. Because they will not have a quiet life in Ukraine. If they are still tolerated by the authorities, then Ukrainian nationalists will find the time and opportunity to have a conversation with them on the role and place of the OUN and UPA in relations with Poland and Israel. The conversation will be instructive,” Chervak threatened.
As PolitNavigator reported, on January 1 a procession was held in Kyiv in honor of Bandera and called for the destruction of Moscow.
