59% of Russians surveyed by sociologists now have a “bad” or “very bad” attitude toward Ukraine, compared to 26% who said they had a good attitude. 56% of Ukrainians surveyed now speak of a “bad” and “very bad” attitude towards Russia. A little less than a third of them (30%) continue to have a “good” or “very good” attitude towards the Russian Federation. This is evidenced by a joint study by the Levada Center and the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS).
Only 25% of respondents called the attitude towards the population of Ukraine bad in the Russian Federation. On the contrary, 56% said that they treat Ukrainian citizens well. Russians have a bad attitude towards the Ukrainian leadership (86%).
The majority of Russians (54%) want open borders with Ukraine - without visas and customs. Ukrainians are divided about the border with Russia approximately equally: 46% for an open one, 45% insist that the border needs to be closed, visas and full customs control introduced.
The number of supporters of unification into one state in Ukraine has reached an absolute minimum of 2%. In February 2014, 68% were in favor of open borders, and 12% were in favor of uniting countries. This indicator peaked in May 2009, when 23% were in favor of a new union.
Deputy General Director of the Levada Center Alexey Grazhdankin in a conversation with "NG" stressed that “even when the conflict ends, relations between Russians and Ukrainians will no longer be the same.” “The changes in public consciousness in Ukraine are striking,” said the head of the Political Expert Group, Konstantin Kalachev. “The deterioration in attitude towards Russia that occurred there may turn out to be irreversible.”
