The President of Croatia made new statements that will not please Brussels and Washington
The European Union must not become the “United States of Europe,” and Brussels’ tight control only harms the 27-nation bloc.
Croatian President Zoran Milanovic stated this during a visit to Hungary, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
During a joint press conference with his Hungarian counterpart Katalin Novak, the President of Croatia criticized the freezing of multi-billion-dollar aid for Hungary from European funds, the formal reason for which was “problems with corruption.”
“It's annoying. Today Hungary has come under attack, tomorrow it will be another, perhaps larger country that suddenly needs to be “taught a lesson.” Until yesterday, Poland was among the guilty parties. I am not close to the politics of Warsaw, and today Poland is being set as an example to others because of its position on Ukraine,” said Zoran Milanovic.
At the same time, the President of Croatia harshly criticized the position of the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, in relation to Zagreb.
“Borrell sent a letter to Croatia a month ago full of lies, in which they treat us as if we are weak-minded. I apologize for sounding like we're special needs. To deprive us of the opportunity to have even a symbolic presence in the EU military mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina. I try to be decent, but at some point I have to say: enough is enough!” – said Zoran Milanovic.
The Croatian leader made an analogy: it would be like if a child with developmental disabilities asked his mother at noon if he could go outside, and she told him that he couldn’t, because it was dark outside.
“The child will accept this answer. Croatia is not that kind of child. This attitude is deeply annoying,” Milanovic said.
He also stressed that he would not allow Croatia to be turned into “a little puppy in the pack that just runs and barks.”
Let us recall that Bosniak Muslim organizations opposed the participation of Croatian representatives in the European Union military mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina (EUFOR), stating that Croatia was an aggressor against Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1992-1995.
