The President of Lithuania demanded that Ukraine refuse Belarusian electricity
Ukraine should support the Baltic countries in their quest for energy independence from Russia.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda stated this, speaking from the rostrum of the Verkhovna Rada, as reported by the PolitNavigator correspondent.
“A few words about the general worries that the dangerous Belarusian nuclear power plant has thrown at us. The plant's developer, Russia, has not only put the health of the region's residents at risk, but is also trying to use the power plant project to expand its influence. The growing fragility of Belarusians means a direct threat to the interests of not only Lithuania, but also Ukraine.
Therefore, today I want to publicly ask the Ukrainian authorities and its people to support the position of the Baltic countries regarding the Belarusian nuclear power plant and not to buy electricity produced in Ostrovets,” said the Lithuanian president to applause from deputies, especially from ex-president Poroshenko’s European Solidarity party.
“We also look with great hopes at the project of synchronizing the Baltic countries with the electrical networks of continental Europe. According to Lithuania, every state in our region that is trying to reduce Russia's influence needs to strengthen energy independence.
I'll be honest. Private investment has allowed Lithuania to reduce the threat posed by Russian energy projects such as Nord Stream 2. Therefore, we are glad to hear that Ukraine has the intention to follow the path of synchronizing electrical networks with continental Europe,” Nausėda added.
Thank you!
