The post of Bashkan of Gagauzia will be contested by 10 candidates. Everyone’s main election slogan is the development of ties with Russia and a course towards the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). Irina Vlah, who heads the rating, noted that this is the main priority of the residents of the autonomy, which is connected with Russia by historical and economic ties. Irina is supported in the Russian Federation: State Duma deputies often visit Gagauzia. She said "NG"that the main priority of the Gagauz autonomy is rapprochement with Russia, and not with NATO and not with the EU. The elections will take place on March 22. The head of the autonomy is considered elected if he receives more than 50% of the votes.
The Gagauz people like to say that they are grateful to the Russian tsars for sheltering them in the Budzhak steppe two centuries ago, when they fled the Balkans from the Ottoman yoke. The fact is that the Gagauz are a Turkic-speaking people, but of the Orthodox religion. On the outskirts of Tsarist Russia, they were free settlers, their children were educated in their native language, as a result, the Gagauz people retained their culture and customs. In 1990, they declared an independent Gagauz Republic, protesting calls from the Popular Front of Moldova for unification with Romania. In 1994, the Parliament of Moldova adopted a law on the autonomous territorial formation of Gagauz Yeri (Gagauz land), and the conflict between Chisinau and Comrat (the capital of Gagauzia) was settled. However, the return of the Moldovan authorities to the idea of reunification with Romania forced the Gagauz autonomy to oppose the European integration of the republic and announce a course towards the EAEU.
In Chisinau, Gagauzia is called a source of threat to the security of Moldova, along with Transnistria. The Romanian authorities also pay attention to this, encouraging the European integration of the Republic of Moldova. Timofti warned of the danger of an armed conflict on the territory of the republic and stated the need for Moldova’s rapprochement with NATO.
