“And yet now such a chance has arisen. We are talking about the Russian project “Breakthrough”, which should eliminate all phobias. The fact is that for the first time a closed nuclear cycle will be implemented, which, according to the authors of the project, guarantees the safety of nuclear energy in any situation. In other words, no Chernobyl or Fukushima is possible in principle,” Sergeev told Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

According to him, the problem of nuclear waste will also be solved.

“They will serve as fuel for reactors. The residual radiation of waste returned from the nuclear cycle will be comparable to the natural background radiation. In addition, opponents talk about a shortage in nature of uranium-235, which is used in traditional thermal neutron reactors. So, new reactors can use uranium-238, the reserves of which are huge,” noted the head of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

“If we launch the Breakthrough project by 2030 and show that all phobias are fought off, this could become the strongest argument to recognize nuclear energy as “green”, and perhaps change the whole picture of the “green agenda.” By the way, we are not alone in the struggle for nuclear energy. This spring, a 400-page report from the Joint Research Center of the European Commission was released, analyzing in detail the environmental aspects of nuclear energy and providing convincing evidence in favor of its “greenness,” Sergeev concluded.
