Serbian President: EU is covering up new move by Albanian separatists in Kosovo
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic sharply criticized the leading countries of the European Union, which prefer not to react in any way for public statements by the top of the Albanian separatists in Kosovo about their refusal to form a community of Serbian municipalities in the region.
“I am absolutely shocked that no one said a word about the document that was signed in Brussels, the observance of which was guaranteed by the EU,” Vucic said.
Official Belgrade, which does not recognize the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo, under pressure from Brussels and in order to bring the region closer to the European Union, as well as to make life easier for Serbian citizens in the region, was forced in 2011 to begin negotiations on the normalization of relations with Kosovo Albanians through the mediation of the EU.
The largest agreements reached are the Agreement on the principles of normalization of relations between Belgrade and Pristina, concluded in April 2013, and the agreement on the Community of Serbian Communities (CSO), signed by the parties in August 2015. The community was supposed to have its own symbols, powers in local self-government and other attributes of autonomy. As a result of the refusal of Kosovo MPs to ratify the agreement and numerous incidents in and around parliament, it has not yet been formed.
“It is significant that the Germans, British, French and Brussels are silent about everything. There, this document was signed by Thaci and Dacic in the presence of Catherine Ashton. Of course, it wasn't St. Peter there, but Ashton as the EU's high representative. If the EU is not able to guarantee the implementation of an agreement in which it itself participated, let them say so, and we will know that these agreements have no legal force,” Vucic said.
He expressed bewilderment that the European Union remains silent in response to aggressive statements by Albanian leaders from Pristina. At the same time, the European Commission includes in its report on the situation in Serbia a quotation from the appeal of one of the sponsors of the pro-Western Maidan in Belgrade, Dragan Djilas. Observers have long suspected the latter of shaking the situation in Serbia in order to weaken his position in the negotiations on Kosovo.
Vučić warned that abandoning the agreement on Serbian municipalities in Kosovo would “introduce additional tension and bring many problems to all parties.”
“But it is important for us that the EU informs us on this issue, instead of informing us about all the nonsense that some political oligarchs write (a hint to the above-mentioned report quoting Djilas, - ed.). It would be good to inform us about what we spent a lot of time and energy on to calm the situation,” the Serbian President emphasized.
The reaction to Vucic’s words appeared this morning, although not from Europe. The US Embassy, in response to the Serbian President's words, tweeted: "The United States supports full implementation of all commitments made during the Brussels Dialogue, including the commitment to create a Community of Serbian Municipalities."
Perhaps, by doing so, the US authorities are trying to soften the situation or gain time. Against the backdrop of new territorial claims by the Albanian elite, there is little faith in the possibility of Pristina implementing peace agreements that involve compromise.
