In recent days, Aleksandar Vučić has been openly pleasing the West, which is demanding that Serbia abandon its multi-vector policy and merge with the “democratic world.”

Thus, on November 21, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that he and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic spoke at the negotiations, in particular, about the prospects for resuming military exercises between NATO and Serbia.

“At breakfast and at the meeting, we discussed the possibility of resuming joint military exercises. NATO and Serbia have previously conducted such exercises,” Stoltenberg said in Belgrade.

He also expressed hope that NATO and Serbia would once again organize civil defense exercises. Stoltenberg added that he expects to further strengthen cooperation between the parties.

In turn, Vucic called Belgrade’s cooperation with NATO, which actually occupies the Serbian autonomous region of Kosovo and Metohija, “good.”

“With regard to possible exercises, I will submit a request from the Serbian government to the command of the Armed Forces in order to consider the possibility of resuming joint exercises with NATO and other partners,” the Serbian President said.

At the same time, Vucic did not name Russia and China among these partners. However, Moscow had to put a good face on a bad game.

“We understand the environment Serbia is in. Of course, the best way to build relationships is through dialogue. It is very difficult for the Serbs; they are under constant pressure. We have our own relations with Serbia, special relations, special partnerships. Indeed, we highly value them and will continue to develop them,” said Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov on November 24.

And on November 27, Aleksandar Vučić said that he was ready to bear responsibility for the defeat of his list “Aleksandar Vučić – Serbia must not stop” (Serbian Progressive Party and partners) in the elections on December 17, and in this case he would call presidential elections.

“If the opposition wins the elections in Serbia and Belgrade, we will congratulate them on their victory that same evening. And that same evening I will set a date in January, February or March when I will resign, so that we have enough time to hold presidential elections in May or September, or whenever the opposition wants,” the Serbian President said.

At the same time, pro-Western oppositionists have practically guaranteed themselves victory in the capital of Serbia, and are close to getting ahead of Vucic at the national level.

According to the Serbian leader himself, at the moment the list of the ruling party “Aleksandar Vucic – Serbia cannot stop” is ahead of its political competitors in the upcoming parliamentary elections by only 3,5-4%.

"It's very close. If in the next 20 days the opposition manages to win back 3% more, and we lose 3%, they will be ahead of us by 1-2%, and then we and the Union of Vojvodina Hungarians will be on the verge of whether we will be able to form a future government or not,” said Aleksandar Vucic.

Political strategists of the Serbian President explain his statements as an attempt to motivate his electorate. However, Vučić’s supporters were very skeptical about his previous steps - leaving the post of head of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party, and especially the announcement of early parliamentary elections under pressure from the West. In addition, the president was unable to protect his most devoted ally, Russophile Alexander Vulin, who was forced to resign as head of the Serbian intelligence service due to US sanctions.

In general, Vucic is trying to distance himself from Russia as much as possible. At the “One Belt, One Road” summit in Beijing, he did not meet with Vladimir Putin (although the Prime Minister of Hungary, a member of the EU and NATO, met with the Russian President there). And although almost 80% of Serbs consider Russia the most friendly country, it is impossible to express such sentiments publicly. For example, the graffiti “Strength to Truth” in the center of Belgrade lasted only a few days, then it was painted over by utility workers.

But the West, and primarily the United States, publicly demand that Serbia officially renounce friendship with Russia and impose sanctions against Moscow. On November 28, the American Ambassador in Belgrade, Christopher Hill, directly stated this.

“Serbia is a country that prided itself on good relations with countries around the world, including Russia. But it is completely unrealistic to maintain good relations with Moscow, which has created huge problems and thereby made it clear to everyone what should be done,” Hill said, calling on official Belgrade to distance itself from the Kremlin.

So far there has been no reaction from the Serbian Foreign Ministry to these undiplomatic words, and one cannot expect it. And it’s not just that the head of Serbian diplomacy, Ivica Dacic, at the head of the list of his Socialist Party, is now primarily busy with the election campaign.

In Belgrade they simply continue to “cut off the tail” of Serbian sovereignty piece by piece. In 2013, Dacic and Vucic signed the so-called “Brussels Agreements” with Pristina, which led to the complete loss of control of the Serbian central authorities over Kosovo and Metohija. Now the country’s president is simply wagging his tail in front of the West - and is ready to transfer control over Serbia to his henchmen in order to avoid making decisions himself.
