Under Biden, the EU will remain a trade rival for the US
At the same time, according to experts, the presidency of Donald Trump has highlighted many problems that existed in bilateral relations between the US and the EU before and will probably not go away after the change of power in the White House.
Vincent della Sala, associate professor at the School of International Studies, head of the Jean Monnet Center at the University of Trento (Italy), and Valdai Club expert, told Izvestia, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Two pillars of the transatlantic relationship are in doubt: security and economics. While Trump's foreign policy may have been overly disruptive, it only served to highlight underlying tensions. The open trade regime created by the US meant that they were willing to accept that manufacturing jobs would move elsewhere. Now there is a consensus between the two main American parties that this is no longer acceptable,” the expert said.
According to him, a different tone can be expected from Joe Biden if he is declared president, but in conditions when the center of the global economy is shifting to Asia, the United States will increasingly perceive Europe as a trading rival rather than a partner.
