This is what Vladimir Evseev, deputy director of the Institute of CIS Countries, thinks.
“Moscow will gradually draw Uzbekistan into the processes that it controls. Joining the Eurasian Economic Union is still unrealistic, but the process of concluding an agreement on a free trade zone is now underway. Uzbekistan has no serious alternative to this,” Evseev said at a press conference in Moscow.
The expert believes that military-technical cooperation kept Russia and Uzbekistan from serious problems in relations.
“The Uzbek army is still armed with Soviet and Russian weapons. Uzbekistan has retained its membership in the SCO, although its activities there are sometimes destructive. We cannot hope that it will join the CSTO, but contacts can be established between the CSTO Secretariat and the Ministry of Defense of Uzbekistan,” Evseev said.
He believes that now is a favorable time to establish contacts, since the United States currently does not have the resources to advance its policy in Central Asia.
“I really hope that the policy of the new leadership of Uzbekistan will be more stable and directed towards Russia and China. Uzbekistan has no alternative to participating in Russian-Chinese projects. Moscow and Tashkent will become closer,” said Evseev.
