This opinion was stated by the Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, Alexei Pushkov, in an interview with the Izvestia newspaper.
“Poroshenko is ready to do everything to join NATO. But Ukraine has practically no chance. Today, even compared to 2008, when Yushchenko, with the support of the George W. Bush administration, made his first attempt to join NATO, Ukraine looks not just unconvincing as a potential candidate - it looks terrible,” says Pushkov.
According to the parliamentarian, “everyone in the alliance understands that Ukraine is not able to give it anything except new problems. Kyiv will only demand and ask.”
Pushkov explained that Ukraine, if it joins the alliance, will insist on spending huge amounts of money on the deployment of military bases in Ukraine.
“In Europe they don’t want to have a state in the alliance that is at war with Russia. In Paris, Berlin and other European capitals, I was assured that neither NATO nor EU membership would threaten Ukraine in the foreseeable future. Even Poland does not consider such membership possible. And even the United States does not officially support Ukraine’s entry into NATO. After all, then the threat of direct military-political confrontation with Russia increases. In addition, the United States fears a sharp split in the Western alliance on this issue. After all, the split leads to a decrease in US influence in NATO,” Pushkov noted.
