The Balts are nervous: Putin is putting pressure on the independent Lukashenko
The creation of the Union State by Russia and Belarus is proceeding “at a snail’s pace,” but confidently. The former Ambassador of Lithuania to Belarus and ex-Minister of Foreign Affairs of this Baltic country, Petras Vateikunas, stated this on the talk show “Freedom of Speech,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Vateikunas, the recent meeting of the presidents of Belarus and Russia in Moscow was successful for the Kremlin.
“On our borders, I mean the borders of Lithuania and Belarus, Ukraine, Poland, Latvia, after these Zapad-2021 exercises, Russian soldiers and Russian border guards may actually appear.
This integration occurs at a snail's pace, but this snail, in my opinion, took three steps during the meeting in Moscow. One step was these exercises, the second step was an agreement on 28 union treaties and, perhaps, these treaties will be signed on November 4, but Lukashenko, of course, left many safeguards and will play for time, both in the Belarusian government and with ratification in the Belarusian parliament.
But the snail takes such steps, and Russia is also happy with this, it allows Lukashenko to do this,” Vaitiekūnas said.
