This opinion is expressed by Edward Lucas, senior editor of the British edition of The Economist, in an article published on the pages of the Ukrainian Week magazine.
The author writes that thanks to the Barack Obama administration, NATO has “real plans for the defense of its allies.”
“But overall, the results of the Obama administration have been very disappointing,” laments Lucas. – Especially against the background of unceremonious constant Russian attacks on American institutions and political processes. And they are by no means limited to ordinary espionage. In turn, these are overt attempts to influence the outcome of the US presidential election. And it’s not just the Kremlin’s scary cronies from the Trump camp who commit them. Hacker attacks and information showers are aimed at depriving Hillary Clinton of her chances of success and undermining public confidence in the entire political system of the country. Meanwhile, the primary task of foreign policy is the security of one’s own state. Given this criterion, the Obama administration clearly failed the test.”
“If we interpret what is happening in pessimistic terms, we can say that we are on the threshold of the end of Pax Americana (Ukrainians, and not only them, apparently believe that we have already crossed this threshold). After six decades of unquestioned leadership of the free world, the United States appears to be increasingly losing its desire to be a decisive force that acts in its own allied interests. And this is an extremely dangerous message to the world!” sums up Lucas, who is considered one of the apologists of the new “Cold War” with Russia.
