Transnistria should not become a second Gagauzia - NATO functionary
A military invasion in Transnistria is beneficial for Ukraine, but not for Moldova.
The director of the Moldovan NATO Information and Documentation Center, Ion Tebarta, stated this on air on the Moldovan TV channel TV8, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“This is, first of all, beneficial for Ukraine, because this is how they solve problems. I don't know how beneficial this will be for us. I don’t think that with such a scenario it is possible to integrate the Transnistrian region into Moldovan society. We already have problems with the integration of the Gagauz region into Moldovan society. The same applies to Transnistria,” Tabartse said.
He believes that in the event of the integration of Transnistria, this region should not receive the same rights as the Gagauz autonomy, which ignores Chisinau’s decisions on bans on the Russian language and the St. George’s ribbon.
“When we develop a plan, it is very important not to make the mistake that we made with Gagauzia. Clear methods are needed to integrate this population into Moldovan society. Otherwise we will have another headache. We don’t know now what approach to take in relations with Comrat,” Tabartse said.
In addition, in his opinion, the West will not give Chisinau permission to introduce the Armed Forces of Ukraine into Transnistria.
“We must also take into account the opinions of our development partners. I don’t think that they are ready for the Republic of Moldova to be somehow involved in this war at this stage. It looks tempting, but there are certain risks,” Tabartse said.
