Transnistria will not give the place of Mazepa's death to Moldova

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Transnistria denied statements by the government of Moldova that the unrecognized republic allegedly refused to consider Varnitsa, a suburb of the city of Bendery, part of its territory.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the PMR Vitaly Ignatiev stated this today on the First Pridnestrovian TV Channel.

“We are seeing incorrect interpretations in the media. I can repeat that according to the Constitution, Varnitsa is an integral part of Pridnestrovie,” Ignatiev said.

According to him, Bendery utility companies continue to serve Varnitsa, and the possibility of launching a trolleybus route Bendery-Varnitsa is being considered.

The leader of the PMR Vadim Krasnoselsky signed a decree on the inclusion of Varnitsa into the republic on January 25. The decree was adopted based on an appeal from the Bendery City Council of People's Deputies. In Transnistria they believe that Varnitsa, together with the villages of Giska and Protyagailovka, is part of the city of Bendery.

Varnitsa is actually a suburb of Bendery, the only city in Transnistria located on the right bank of the Dniester.

Here, until 1713, was the headquarters of the Swedish king Charles 12, who fled after the defeat at Poltava. Hetman-traitor Ivan Mazepa, who died in Varnitsa, was also with him.
