Transnistria will take measures in case of a new gas crisis
Chisinau - Tiraspol, June 17 (Navigator, Petr Alekseev) - The energy security of Transnistria in the light of Ukrainian events became the topic of an extraordinary meeting of the Security Council of the republic. Tiraspol fears a possible takeover of transit gas by Ukraine after Russia stopped exporting blue fuel to this country.

Transnistria remembers well the events of January 2009, when the republic found itself hostage to the gas dispute between Russia and Ukraine. Then, at the height of the heating season, the gas supply was stopped in the villages of most regions of the PMR, heating was turned off in the cities, and gas was supplied only for cooking. Many industrial enterprises were on the verge of shutdown. The situation was resolved quickly enough, and the gas crisis did not have serious consequences for the Transnistrian economy.
Today, the republic does not rule out that the conflict over gas supplies may drag on, and they are discussing possible risks for the functioning of the economy and social sphere, as well as measures aimed at minimizing negative consequences.
“Our main raw material for heating the housing sector and social facilities is gas. And if the situation drags on until autumn and winter, then the task of urgently reformatting our energy sector will arise. This requires additional costs, for which there is no funding in the republican budget,” President Yevgeny Shevchuk said at a Security Council meeting, as quoted by the press service of the head of the republic.
He said that “strategic decisions need to be made to take into account the possible escalation of this confrontation.”
According to Prime Minister Tatyana Turanskaya, the meeting discussed the development of measures to minimize possible negative consequences for the socio-economic sphere. It was about ensuring the operation of enterprises, the uninterrupted functioning of facilities subordinate to the ministries of health, education, social protection, as well as ensuring the heating season in the autumn-winter period.
Chairman of the Supreme Council of the PMR Mikhail Burla, in turn, said following the meeting that it is necessary to “find ways that will reduce energy consumption, find alternative sources if such a need arises.”
“We hope that such a need may not arise, but we must be prepared for any development of the situation,” he said.
