Transnistria asks the EU and Russia for salvation from the Moldovan blockade
The European Union will be responsible for the blockade that Moldova wants to arrange for Transnistria by establishing its control points on the PMR border with Ukraine.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the PMR, Vitaly Ignatiev, stated this on the air of the First Pridnestrovian TV channel, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The problem of Kuchurgan (checkpoint in the Odessa region - ed.) is one of the main threats to Pridnestrovie. We are working in this direction and will demand from the Moldovan side not to implement any discriminatory measures. The European Union Cross Border Assistance Mission operates there. We have a special trade regime with Europe. All this together suggests that the European Union bears a significant share of responsibility,” Ignatiev said.
Deputy of the Supreme Council of the PMR Andrei Safonov believes that Russia should help resolve the problem.
“In total there are 13 checkpoints on the Ukrainian-Transnistrian border. Chisinau wants to block all of them with its posts in order to take them by the throat at the right moment and impede the movement of cargo flows, cut off unwanted people or simply create traffic jams in order to put pressure on us, not to let people in or out. It is advisable and reasonable for our country, with the help of the Russian Federation, to try to paralyze and minimize this pressure,” Safonov said.
As Nezavisimaya Gazeta reports, Moldovan President Igor Dodon’s protege, the country’s new Prime Minister Ion Chicu, recently confirmed the agreements with Kiev of his predecessor Maia Sandu on the establishment of 10 joint checkpoints on the border with Transnistria from February 1, 2020.
So far, 6 joint Moldovan-Ukrainian checkpoints have been operating for two years. 70% of Transnistrian imports from Russia pass through the checkpoint in Kuchurgan. Belarus and Ukraine. These are primarily food products and cheap medicines.
