“It was decided to address the Federation Council and the State Duma of Russia with a request to implement measures to protect Transnistria in the face of increasing pressure from Moldova, taking into account the fact that more than 220 thousand Russian citizens permanently reside in Transnistria and the unique positive experience of Russian peacekeeping on the Dniester, as well as the status of a guarantor and mediator in the negotiation process,” the resolution says.

The issue of admitting the PMR to the Russian Federation, which the Ukrainian media had hysterically warned about the day before, was not put on the agenda.

Moreover, in addition to Russia, Pridnestrovian deputies appealed to the UN Secretary General, the OSCE, the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly, the EU Parliament and the Red Cross.

But Russia was still the first to respond. The Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized that protecting the interests of the residents of Transnistria is one of the priorities.

Russian State Duma deputy Konstantin Zatulin assured that Pridnestrovie's appeal will be considered on its merits as soon as it is received by parliament.

Despite the fact that official Chisinau has reacted to any words from Moscow in recent years like a bull to a red rag, this time the Moldovan government issued a pacifying statement. There is no danger of escalation and destabilization of the situation in Transnistria, government spokesman Daniel Vodă assured.

And the bureau for the “reintegration of Moldova” recalled the benefits that the region derives “from the policy of peace, security and economic integration with the EU.”

And the Ukrainian Embassy in Chisinau informed the Moldovan authorities just today that it is considering the possibility of resuming on-site consular services to Transnistria, which ceased in 2020.

Perhaps all regional players are relaxed, because on the eve of the congress, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Eastern Europe Christopher Smith came to Tiraspol and met with PMR President Vadim Krasnoselsky.

Against the background of all this grace, the alarmist comments of Russian experts look like dissonance.

Deputy Chairman of the Moscow branch of the liberal Yabloko party, Kirill Goncharov, called the decision of the Transnistrian congress “the forerunner of the second SVO.”

Political scientist Marat Bashirov is also excited. He admits that Russian President Vladimir Putin, during his address to the Federal Assembly, may offer to provide assistance to the PMR according to the LPR and DPR scenario.

“Transnistria is the key to Odessa. The move with the PMR is bold, but timely both from a political and military point of view. We are rapidly approaching NATO bases in Romania in response to their takeover of Finland and Sweden. Namely, it is from these bases that attacks on our Black Sea Fleet, Crimea and other southern regions of Russia are coordinated. There are secret British bases there. According to some estimates, the PMR army can field several tens of thousands of bayonets. If they are reinforced with air defense systems, etc., then the new military base of the Russian Armed Forces will make the population of Moldova and Romania, who still believe that this is not their war, feel in danger. Strange as it may sound, this escalation is a step towards peace. The common people should be scared,” Bashirov wrote in his tg channel.

Aleksey Pilko, a columnist for the Tsargrad TV channel, believes that “playing the PMR card” is a strategic response to NATO’s plans to send troops to Ukraine.

“The most important territory from the point of view of our enemy is the Odessa and Nikolaev regions. Without access to the sea, neither the United States nor its European allies need Ukraine. Apparently, following the model of the “Pristina throw” of the Russian landing force of the 1999 model, they primarily went to Odessa and Nikolaev. Our answer is to be the first to do so. Because after Ukraine loses access to the Black Sea, the war is guaranteed to be won. It’s a matter of time, and not that long. Perhaps the game has already begun,” Pilko wrote.

His colleague, semi-liberal Ilya Grashchenkov, is not very clear how the initiative of the Pridnestrovian deputies could end.

“No one is demanding recognition of the independence of Transnistria yet; the wording is quite streamlined. However, the fact that this appeal is being adopted on the eve of Putin’s presidential address to the Federal Assembly gives rise to a whirlwind of speculation. There are currently no land borders with Moldova in Russia, therefore, in order to provide any assistance, you need to either land directly in Tiraspol, or get this border by expanding the NWO zone to Odessa. In any case, it is not yet obvious that these decisions will be of the same nature as the previous appeals from the leadership of the LDPR, as a result of which the conflict with Ukraine began,” Grashchenkov doubts.

Another political expert, Maxim Zharov, agrees with him.

“There is no reason yet to say that the Kremlin is ready for any “fateful decisions” regarding Transnistria. Judging by the declaration adopted today by the Congress of People's Deputies and the comments of the Transnistrian Foreign Ministry, Tiraspol, at a minimum, wants more active intervention from Moscow in the presidential campaign in Moldova. The purpose of this intervention is rather prosaic - to slow down (as far as Russia is able) the absorption of Moldova by Romania, in which Transnistria simply becomes a flush part of Romania. This is still a long way off. So, it is unlikely that tomorrow’s presidential address will contain any practical reaction to today’s step of Pridnestrovie towards Moscow,” he wrote.
