Transnistria is protected from Ukraine by duties
Transnistria intends to introduce a customs duty on the export of onions.
This was reported by the press service of the PMR Government, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
As the government explained, this measure will help avoid shortages and rising prices in the domestic market. The duty will be in effect until the start of the new harvest (June 1 this year).
It should be noted that in Moldova this year onion prices have tripled. The reason was uncontrolled export to Ukraine.
“Vegetables are now going to Ukraine. Moldova, from a country traditionally importing onions from Ukraine, has today turned into an exporting country. Last summer we exported other vegetables to Ukraine,” said Vladimir Bolya, Minister of Agriculture of Moldova.
There is also a reverse process. Moldova is one of the three largest consumers of Ukrainian cheeses. Ukraine exported about 9 thousand tons of cheese last year – 30,4% more than in 2021.
