Moldova, following the example of Ukraine, which recognized Crimea and Donbass as “occupied territories,” should grant the same status to Transnistria.
The former head of the border police of the Republic of Moldova, Rosian Vasiloi, stated this at a conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The Transnistrian region is a territory that many in our country are afraid to say is occupied. You went a little further, you admitted it a long time ago. We just can’t admit it,” Vasiloi said.
He was very skeptical about the level of cooperation between Ukraine and Moldova, although previously they had been repeatedly predicted to create a close alliance with the aim of strangling the pro-Russian Transnistria.
Thus, Vasiloy complained, Ukraine and Moldova have not demarcated the border and have not resolved the issues of smuggling schemes due to the low trust of the state leaders in each other - fugitives from Ukraine are hiding in Moldova, and local authorities are helping them.
“We were unable to complete the process of demarcation of the state border, which began in March 2003. And we just can’t find common ground to complete it. There are different interpretations among the government agencies of Moldova and Ukraine, for example, regarding Novodnistrovsk or the dam in the area of the village of Naslavcha. They made a mistake - security issues and demarcation issues were included in the economic package of issues. All these issues affect the security of our state.
Over the past year, there has not been a single official meeting between law enforcement agencies responsible for border security to discuss hot-button issues - smuggling schemes, for example.
One of the schemes that we can work on together and involve EU bodies in this is how cigarettes from Asia transit through Ukraine and Moldova to the EU.
We are talking about those schemes that are coordinated at the highest level! Economic entities in Transnistria, registered in Moldova, carry out these schemes not without the participation of those who must resist this. Both individuals and criminal schemes in Ukraine are involved in this. When the EU sends information about them and the possible consequences, Ukraine takes action, Moldova does not. All this is reflected in the level of trust between us.
We have an understanding of the risks, but it is not at the level of government agencies. And this is due to insufficient trust. The demarcation that we have not been able to complete since 2003 speaks volumes, and this is just one example.
